Our daughter, Brynn is deafblind and we are reaching out to our community and asking for help in funding her Intervener for the upcoming year. An Intervener serves as the eyes and ears for an individual who is deafblind. Brynn has been fortunate enough to experience the most amazing Intervener, Michele over the past 2 years and it has pushed her forward in her development and opened up opportunities we never thought possible. Michele’s expertise and dedication have turned scary situations into manageable ones and obstacles into triumphs. Michele modifies materials for Brynn, coordinates her classes and Teachers, she modifies environments and experiences so that Brynn can use her residual vision to her advantage. Michele turns spoken language into sign language, sign language into printed words and all of it into meaningful communication and so much more. Unfortunately, unlike health aides and interpreters, the laws don’t yet recognize a child’s right to an Intervenor. Neither health insurance nor the school system are willing to provide this crucial service.
Please check out her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/InBrynnsShoes/ that we maintain as an online community and resource center for people with sensory loss and those who love and interact with them. We hope to inspire families of newly-born, newly-diagnosed children that the possibilities are still endless for their child, educate on the role, purpose and importance of Intervenors and advocate for laws that support children with sensory loss and increase accessibility of Interveners for children who are deafblind.
By providing simple tutorials on how to modify materials, environments and experiences to include children with sensory-impairments, we aim to increase community access for individuals with sensory loss. These resources can be provided to administrators, educators, coaches, family members, friends, anyone who comes into contact with a child or adult that is hearing-impaired, visually-impaired, deafblind or with any sensory-impairment. Our intention is make life much easier for parents each time their child embarks on a new adventure, goes to a new school, begins a new extra-curricular activity or visits a new relative.
