September 11, 2016: Friends of NSO reception for membership. Friends of NSO is the Orchestra support group, providing assistance throughout the season as ushers, sponsoring special events, and fund raising. September 11, 2016: Newark Symphony celebrates Newark’s “Community Days” with a booth distributing season brochures, selling promotional items such as tee shirts and coffee mugs, and providing information about the upcoming season.
October 9, 2016: NSO Free Family Concert: “To the Planets and Beyond,” The Newark Symphony performs a concert designed to appeal to young audience members, ADMISSION FREE, with two of Gustav Holst’s The Planets, (Mars and Jupiter), and selections from Star Wars, the movie; the concert will be narrated by Greg Jukes, gifted actor & musician.
October 30, 2016: Season opening concert presents Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, Serban Petrescu, Violin, and Philipe Chao, Viola, soloists; followed with a performance of Gustav Holst’s Planets, joined by the Delaware Music School Women’s Chorus, Joanne ward, Director; the University Singers, Duane Cottell, Director, and with stunning visual effects by Giovanni Ciranni.
November 19, 2016: Chamber Concert featuring music by women composers: Fanny Mendelssohn, Jennifer Campbell, Tai Sakamoto, and more.
December 11, 2016 Symphony concert: Special performance of Shostakovich Prelude & Fugue in D minor, orchestrated and guest-conducted by Mordecai Samuel Fuhrman, alumnus member of the NSO. Program also includes Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
February 11, 2017 Chamber Concert (honoring Black History month): Alice Parker, Sermon from the Mountain, Wesley Broadnax, Narrator, with Travis Lucas, Baritone soloist, and featuring the Newark Symphony Chorus. Concert also features Tahira, Story Teller, narrating African stories.
March 5, 2017 Symphony Concert: Two winners of the NSO Youth Concerto Competition will perform. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Suite from Swan Lake Ballet with Delaware Dance Company.
March 11, 2017: NSO Celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a gala event held at the Newark Country Club. The night will include live music, dancing, food, and a silent auction.
March 25, 2017 Chamber Concert: NSO celebrates Music in our Schools month. Admission will be $5 per family. Concert held at First Presbyterian Church of Newark.
May 14, 2017 All Beethoven Symphony Concert: Overture to the Creatures of Prometheus, followed by Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125. Soloists are: Sharon Christman, Soprano; Suzanne DuPlant, Mezzo-soprano; Rick Christman, Tenor, Jeffrey Martin, Bass; with the UD Schola Cantorum, Paul Head, Director
